Potosí is one of the most representative cities in the colonial republican architecture of South America, for that reason it was declared by the UNESCO as Cultural and Natural Patrimony of Humanity.

In this city one can observe and visit colonial monuments, religious and diverse historical relics. In their surroundings there are natural attractions, like artificial lagoons and various towns where fine crafts are made.

It is also possible to enjoy dances and Sunday fairs, the same as in the ancient past.
Potosí was one of the most important cities in the colonial time, a rich mining centre that congregated thousands of residents, where different constructions where carried out, and are considered jewels of the colonial architecture.

Among their attractives, the San Francisco's and Santa Teresa church-museums stand out, the churches of Santo Domingo, San Lorenzo, Jerusalem and some mansions like the house of Antonio's López de Quiroga, the richest and wealthy miner in the area.

 
 

CERRO RICO
It's fame dates from the time of the Inca Huayna Capac who wanted to exploit the mines of the Sumac Orcko (Cerro Rico), but a voice that resounded from the hill prevented the natives to extract the mineral.

Not until 1545 when the Indian Diego Huallpa located it by chance and Spaniards new where the minerals where, they began its exploitation, considered during several centuries as the most important silver fields of the continent.

Nowadays you can visit el Cerro Rico only 700 meters south of the city of Potosí´ and go through some of the tunnels of the colonial mines, with a specialized guide.

CASA REAL DE LA MONEDA
It is a sample of the splendour of the colonial architecture of the city whose construction began by the middle of the XVIII century and it concluded in 1773.

The work was in hands of the designer Salvador Villa who also built the mint houses in Lima and Mexico. In this place silver coins where minted. At the moment it is the Museum of Casa de La Moneda and a declared National Monument, that you can corroborate when visiting it and appreciate its high walls of stones and brick, its wide rooms with decoration and valuable objects of the time, as well as its central patio of high arches where at it's centre there is and ornamental fountain located.
 

BETANZOS
A town located 40 kilometers from Potosí, in route to Sucre. It is known by its traditional local fairs where you can observe the exchange of products, also find fabrics and ceramics of the region.

ACCESS ROADS
The city of Potosí is connected, by land, with the main cities of the Bolivian territory, from La Paz you can get there by bus in 10 hours.
